The "Philharmonisches Streichquintett Berlin", created by a group of chamber music enthusiasts of the Berlin Philharmonic, is the orchestra's youngest chamber music group. Despite its youth (it gave its debut concerts in spring 2007), it has encountered a large success throughout Europe with numerous invitations to the most important European Festivals and a first Japan tour in autumn 2008. The enormous appreciation of the Japanese public has led to a spontaneous reinvitation already for autumn 2009, joined with a first China tour, with concerts notably in Peking and Shanghai.
The Quintet is composed of the most distinguished musicians, who have gathered with the aim to create a unique style of chamber music practise, departing from the fact that this is the only ensemble representing all the five string sections of this famous orchestra. Their original idea is to combine chamber-music-like delicacy and love to detail with the proverbial passionate play of the strings of the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition, each player acts in turn as soloist and accompanist. It’s in this direction of marriage of the finesse of chamber music with a symphonic dimension that the group wants to explore new musical paths, creating its own unmistakable identity.
